Abstract

Collection development is a very popular term in Libraries and information centres as a need for an efficient and balanced collection. This literature based opinion paper discusses the need for School librarians to acquire core competences relevant for collection building capable of making them relevant to the school. The first part of this paper discusses the issue of collection development and, policies. This paper further discusses the need for constant collection evaluation since it is an important component of a comprehensive collection management program. It explains the role of gifts, donation and exchanges in collection development. The issue of collection evaluation methods is thoroughly examined because when available, it enhances the collection of School libraries. This paper stresses that the growth a nd continued existence of school Librarians is dependent on the ability to acquire new skills in the area of collection building required to transform and navigate the performance of students.
